Hyperliquid: Review, Fees and Beginner's Guide
What Hyperliquid is, how this decentralized perpetuals exchange works, exact fees from the official docs, HYPE staking discounts, the risks of leverage and first steps.

In short: Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange with an order book that mainly trades perpetual contracts with leverage. According to its official documentation, perps fees start at 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker and spot at 0.070% / 0.040%. Staking the HYPE token gives a discount of up to 40%. Leverage can wipe out a deposit quickly, so this is a product for experienced traders.
What Hyperliquid is
Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange that works like a classic order-book exchange but runs on its own blockchain. It mainly trades perpetual contracts (perps, derivatives with no expiry date) and also spot. You trade from your own wallet, without a traditional account. Its native token is HYPE.
A perpetual contract lets you bet on a price rising (long) or falling (short) with leverage. If the price moves far enough against you, the exchange force-closes the position, which is called a liquidation. We explain it on Liquidation War.
Fees from the official documentation
Fees are set by 14-day weighted volume (perps volume plus twice spot volume) and assessed daily. Figures below are from Hyperliquid's documentation, checked 29 October 2026.
| Tier | 14-day volume | Perps taker | Perps maker | Spot taker | Spot maker |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | none | 0.045% | 0.015% | 0.070% | 0.040% |
| 1 | over $5m | 0.040% | 0.012% | 0.060% | 0.030% |
| 2 | over $25m | 0.035% | 0.008% | 0.050% | 0.020% |
| 3 | over $100m | 0.030% | 0.004% | 0.040% | 0.010% |
Higher tiers (from $500m) cut maker to 0% and perps taker down to 0.024%. Liquidity providers with a large share of maker volume can earn a negative maker fee (rebate) from −0.001% to −0.003%.
HYPE staking discount
| HYPE staked | Fee discount |
|---|---|
| over 10 | 5% |
| over 100 | 10% |
| over 1,000 | 15% |
| over 10,000 | 20% |
| over 100,000 | 30% |
| over 500,000 | 40% |
Referral discount and special markets
The documentation says the referral discount applies to a user's first $25 million of volume, and the discount level is shown in the interface. HIP-3 markets created by third parties can carry higher fees because the market deployer may add its own share. Check the fee before trading an unfamiliar market.
How to start
- Prepare a wallet and keep a backup of the seed phrase offline (glossary).
- Open Hyperliquid by typing the address yourself. Fake copies of websites are a common scam, see how to spot a scam.
- Connect the wallet and deposit collateral. The interface shows the deposit steps and supported networks; send a small test amount first.
- Start with no or low leverage and an amount whose loss will not hurt you.
Risks
- Liquidation. With higher leverage a small price move closes your position at a loss of your deposit.
- Contract and bridge bugs. Funds on a blockchain exchange face technical risk with no depositor protection.
- Availability and legality. Check that the service is available and legal where you live. It is not a regulated broker.
- Illiquid markets. Prices can swing sharply on thinly traded contracts.
Taxes
Trading profits may be taxable depending on your country. Export your trade history; the exchange will not provide statements.
