KuCoin Review 2026: Fees, Licence Status and Risks
An independent KuCoin review: spot and futures fees, the KCS discount, its history (the 2020 hack and the 2025 US guilty plea), its EU licence status and who it suits.

In short: KuCoin is a large global exchange with a wide choice of coins and a base spot fee of 0.1% maker and 0.1% taker. It also has a serious compliance history: a 2020 hack and, in January 2025, a US guilty plea with about $297 million in penalties. KuCoin EU received a MiCA licence in Austria in November 2025, but reports say the regulator restricted its new business in February 2026. Check your country's status before you register.
What KuCoin is
KuCoin is a centralized crypto exchange offering spot, futures, copy trading and other products. Its homepage currently advertises welcome rewards of up to 10,650 USDT for new users; this is a maximum that depends on conditions (see our Liquidation War page for the note on bonuses).
Fees
According to KuCoin's official VIP fee page (last updated 5 July 2026), the starting level, VIP 0, pays 0.1% maker and 0.1% taker on spot and 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker on futures. Higher VIP levels pay less; for example VIP 4 on Class A pairs is 0.055% maker and 0.075% taker. KuCoin notes that some pairs carry different rates, so check the trading page of the pair.
Paying fees in KCS, KuCoin's own token, gives a discount of about 20% on spot fees according to KuCoin materials, taking the base rate to roughly 0.08%. Sources disagree on whether the discount also covers futures, so treat the official fee page as authoritative.
Regulation and licence status
- EU: KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH received a MiCA authorisation from Austria's FMA on 27 November 2025, which KuCoin says covers the EEA except Malta. Cointelegraph reported that in February 2026 the FMA prohibited it from taking new customers because it lacked suitable AML and sanctions key function holders, and that the order was not yet final. We found no notice confirming whether the restriction has been lifted.
- Other countries: rules differ. KuCoin restricts some jurisdictions in its terms; read them before registering.
Security and history
- 2020 hack. On 26 September 2020 attackers took private keys for hot wallets. Losses were first put above $150 million and later at about $281 million. KuCoin's CEO said 84% was recovered and the rest was covered by its insurance fund.
- 2025 US case. In January 2025 KuCoin pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to pay more than $297 million in fines and forfeiture. Prosecutors alleged it failed to implement effective anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer programs. It agreed to leave the US market for at least two years.
The two events are separate: the penalty concerned compliance failures, not the 2020 hack.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Wide choice of coins and products | 2025 US guilty plea over AML failures |
| Standard 0.1% spot fee with a KCS discount | 2020 hack history |
| Large welcome rewards advertised | EU new-business restriction reported in 2026 |
| Futures and copy trading | Rewards need conditions and are often vouchers |
Who it suits
People outside the EU who want a broad choice of coins, accept the compliance history and keep only what they trade on the exchange, with long-term holdings in their own wallet (see Trezor vs Ledger). EU residents should first check the status of KuCoin EU with the regulator.
