Trezor vs Ledger: Which Hardware Wallet to Choose
Trezor and Ledger compared: security, usability, supported coins, price, origin and who each is for. How to secure cryptocurrency in your own wallet.

In short: both are proven hardware wallets that keep private keys offline. Trezor is a Czech brand with open-source code. Ledger supports a very wide number of coins and has a convenient app. More important than the brand is how you use the wallet: never share your seed phrase and keep it offline.
Why a hardware wallet
If you leave cryptocurrency on an exchange, you rely on the exchange. A hardware wallet keeps the private keys in a separate device and you confirm transactions physically with a button. For larger amounts and long-term holding it is the most commonly recommended option.

Trezor
Trezor is made by a Czech company and has transparent open-source code. Coin support is wide, although smaller than Ledger's. By our data it has no mobile app.
Ledger
Ledger offers a very wide number of supported coins and a convenient app for mobile and desktop. In the past it faced criticism over a leak of customer data (2020) and the controversial Recover feature (2023), so it is worth following how it handles data protection now.
What matters more than the brand
- Buy only directly from the manufacturer or an official shop, never second hand. A used device can be tampered with in advance.
- Never tell anyone your seed phrase (12 or 24 words) and never photograph it. Keep it offline, for example on paper or a metal plate.
- No support will ever ask you for the seed. Whoever wants it is a scammer, see How to spot a crypto scam.
- Back up the phrase in two places and occasionally test a recovery with a small amount.
- Update the firmware only from the official app.
What to choose
- Trezor: if you want open-source code and a European brand.
- Ledger: if you need support for a large number of different coins and a convenient app.
Frequently asked questions
Is a hardware wallet one hundred percent safe?
No. It is considerably safer than an exchange, but the main risk is usually the human factor: losing or revealing the seed phrase, and scams.
What if I lose the wallet?
The coins are not stored in the device but on the blockchain. With the seed phrase you restore them on a new device. Without the phrase they are lost.
From what amount does a hardware wallet pay off?
Many people get one once the value of their cryptocurrency exceeds the price of the wallet and they no longer want to risk an exchange. The decision is individual.
