Frequently asked questions
What is the Bitcoin Rainbow Chart?
It is a logarithmic chart of Bitcoin's price with coloured bands around a long-term trend curve. The bands from blue to red show how far the price is above or below the trend. It visualises the position of the price; it is not a forecast or advice to buy or sell.
How are the bands calculated?
We fitted the whole price history since 2011 with a curve in which the logarithm of the price grows with the logarithm of Bitcoin's age. Each band is half a standard deviation wide of the historical deviations of the price from the trend (on a log scale), and the middle band sits around the trend. It is our own calculation, so it differs slightly from other similar charts.
Can you trade with it?
No. The curve is fitted to past data and always fits in hindsight. The bands shift as new data arrives and a future cycle may differ from past ones.
