“pp” means percentage points of difference from Bitcoin's price change. Data: Yahoo Finance and CoinGecko, excluding stablecoins and wrapped tokens.
How to read the index
- 75 or more: altcoin season. Most of the top 50 altcoins are beating Bitcoin.
- 25 or less: Bitcoin season. Most altcoins are lagging Bitcoin.
- Between 25 and 75: a neutral market with no clear leader.
The standard period is 90 days. Shorter windows (7 and 30 days) show faster changes, the one-year window a longer-term picture. The index looks backwards: it shows where conditions are, not where they are heading.
How we calculate it
We take the 50 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, excluding Bitcoin, stablecoins and wrapped or staked copies. For each we measure the price change over the chosen period and compare it with Bitcoin. The index is the share of coins that beat Bitcoin. We check prices against a second source so a different coin with the same ticker is not counted by mistake. The history chart is calculated for today's top 50, so older values are approximate.
What it means for an investor
Altcoins are riskier than Bitcoin and usually swing more, in both directions. A high reading does not mean altcoins will keep rising, and a low one does not mean a reversal is near. For the basics, read Bitcoin vs Ethereum, How to spot a crypto scam and Portfolio diversification. Live prices are in the crypto rates and on-chain data in the Bitcoin on-chain terminal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Altcoin Season Index?
It is the share of the 50 largest altcoins that outperformed Bitcoin over a chosen period (90 days by default). A reading of 75 or more means altcoin season, 25 or less means Bitcoin season.
How is the index calculated on FinBoss?
From daily prices of the top 50 altcoins by market capitalisation, excluding stablecoins and wrapped tokens. We compare each coin's price change with Bitcoin's and count the share that did better.
What is an altcoin?
An altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, for example Ethereum, Solana or XRP.
Is the index a signal to buy altcoins?
No. It describes what happened in recent days and does not predict the future. Altcoins are riskier than Bitcoin and their prices swing sharply.
Why do the numbers differ from other sites?
Sites use different price sources, numbers of coins and lists of excluded tokens. The principle is the same, but the figures can differ slightly.
