What a halving means

At a halving, the reward miners receive for a new block is cut. Because of it, new bitcoin is issued ever more slowly and the total supply is capped at 21 million. Prices have moved differently after past halvings, but that is neither a law nor a guarantee. Frequently asked questions

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

We estimate it for 11 March 2028. It happens when block 1,050,000 is reached; block 973,465 is being mined now, so 76,535 blocks remain. The exact date depends on how fast blocks are mined.

What is a halving?

An event in which the miners' reward for a new block is cut in half. It happens every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. It slows the creation of new bitcoin but does not decide the price.

What will the reward be after the next halving?

The reward falls from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC per block.

How accurate is the countdown?

It is an estimate. We use the average block time over the last 2,016 blocks, which changes with miners' hash power. Bitcoin mines a block about every 10 minutes, so the real date can differ by weeks or months.
